More on your course readings

Outside of classes that are categorized as African American studies, what other courses have provided readings from African American or African authors. Can you list a few titles?

  1. The Autobiography of an Ex-colored man, lovely book, by James Weldon Johnson. This book talks about the journey of the ex-colored man, who passes as white, when he's black. He's uses this advantage to gain wealth and success. However, during this period if you had this gift, wouldn't you pass? Also, I feel if he could pass as white why couldn’t he be accepted as white, even if he had a little black in his blood. However, that is another story. But this is a black author, and a black novel that I read most recently. (This was my American Culture class, also we read Meville's Benito Cereno, with the slave mutiny. It was like LA Amistad)..Well last semester, I took a Judaic Studies course, and it talked about African Americans a lot as well, but I forgot those readings.

  2. I haven't really been exposed to any African American learning outside of my African American history class. I still try to keep up on my basic Black History, by either reading old history books or watching tv. During Black History Month, I watched a couple of programming on Black History. Most of it was about blacks in sports and television, but still felt like I was truly learning something that was very beneficial. The black authors that read is Hill Harper, writer of Manifest Your Destiny. I also watch Spike Lee's movies that talk about race, racism, and black society, such as Jungle Fever, Do The Right Thing, 4 Little Girls, When the Leeves Broke, etc.
