Difficult books or just plan boring reading assignments

Has your professor ever asked you to read something that was completely uninteresting to you or extremely difficult to read? How do you handle those kind of reading assignments? What kind of support would you like from your instructors?

  1. I read uninteresting difficult texts all the time. What I notice when reading unnecessary texts that I don’t comprehend, I have noticed that I’m taking away from doing homework or studying for an exam. So to at least gain from an uninteresting text, I highlight information that is pleasing to me. I take notes of information that is perplexing or foreign to me and I skim readings of importance of information. Lastly, my professors can highlight the information, in which they want us to study, instead of reading an entire document.

  2. I always come across textbooks that I have to read for a certain or class subject, and most of the time I'm not always intrested in what the topic is about. So what I do is force myself to read the text and look for small details within the text that I can possibly used and relate it to something that I know to get me more involved into the textbook. Once I'm done reading the text, I then ask other people in my class that read the text also and ask them their personal opinion about how did they feel about the text. Then I take their information and compare to my own intrepretion of the text and try to find some common ground on how I can further understand the text. I wish more instructors could be more understanding about the reading that they are assigning and try to cover some ground about the text to their students before they issue the book.

  3. These Profs. are always assigning dry or dull readings that may seem interesting to them. However, to me it often seems pointless! What I do is skim the text. Attempting to read the whole document I lose focus and comprehension is lost. I think Profs. should consider the texts they assign in fav of the majority instead of the interest of themselves.
